Kristian, Pilvy, and Marco, owners of a print shop and framing studio in Tallinn, Estonia, recently contacted Geertjan and Janneke Alkema and asked them to travel to Estonia to provide Conservation Framing training to the team.Geertjan and Janneke were happy to accept the invitation, and the training time was a fantastic opportunity to exchange knowledge and skills, and to elevate the team’s craft of framing to a higher level.
During the intensive training session, we covered various conservation framing techniques which conform to Fine Art Trade Guild Level 1 and Level 2 standards. We began by discussing mountboard standards, emphasizing the importance of using the right materials to optimally protect and conserve artwork. We then reviewed the use of tapes, adhesives and various other mounting methods, analysing the pros and cons of different products and techniques.

An important part of the time spent in Tallinn was discussing the layout of the workshop. A well-organized workshop is crucial for efficiency and quality in the framing process. We shared various strategies and tips for organizing an ergonomic workshop, such as ensuring that all necessary materials and tools are within reach and that work can proceed smoothly and accurately.
The sessions were very well received by our Estonian colleagues. Their enthusiasm and eagerness to learn were contagious, and it was inspiring to see how they immediately put the new techniques and knowledge into practice.

It was a privilege to share our expertise and contribute to furthering the professionalism of the framing industry in Estonia. We look forward to continuing the collaboration and seeing how our colleagues in Tallinn further develop in conservation framing.
