Ian’s Bio

After leaving school Ian started work with DAKS-Simpson, who are designers and producers of high-quality menswear. While working at DAKS he gained his City and Guilds qualification in Craft Tailoring, and Textile Design & Construction.

He started framing his own artwork in 1976, and opened his full-time framing business in Larkhall in 1989. Drawing on lessons he learned during his time at DAKS, he quickly established a reputation for premium quality workmanship, and went on to open his Hamilton shop in 1992.

In 1997, Ian passed the Fine Art Trade Guild ‘Commended Framer’ exam, which made him one of the first qualified framers in Scotland. The ‘Commended Framer’ programme was replaced by the ‘Guild Certified Framer’ programme in 2015, and this now provides the UK’s only recognised framing qualification. As well as the base qualification, there are three advanced modules which cover Conservation Framing, Textile Framing and Mount Design & Function. His workshop is one of very few who have all three disciplines covered at Advanced level.

Ian has always fully supported the programme, and he has been the Guild Examiner in Scotland since 1999. He was Chairman and Master of the Fine Art Trade Guild, which is the body responsible for setting standards for the Art and Framing industry, from 2015-2019. He continues to be an active member of the Guild’s Framing Standards and Qualifications Committee.
