Jo Palmer GCF(APF) Adv.

Jo has a background in administration and marketing in London, working in a variety of industries before a career break to have her family. In 2006 with the start of their own business, The Framing Lot, Jo was initially involved behind the scenes in an administrative role. This very quickly developed into an active framing career as Jo’s keen long-term interest in textile work soon became her specialisation. Taught by Alec on the basics of framing, she went on to develop her own skills, showing an aptitude for design and problem-solving.
Alongside Alec, she passed her Guild Commended Framer exam in 2014 and her organisation and administrative skills were recognised the same year when she was invited to join the Fine Art Trade Guild’s Board of Directors. In 2015 she became a member of the Framing Standards and Qualifications Committee, upgrading it to the Guild Certified Framer qualification the same year. The GCF exam and CPD programme remain the only UK recognised and supported framing qualification. In 2016 she was elected as Vice-Chair of the Guild, stepping up to be the first female framer in its history to become the Chair & Master of the Guild from 2019-22.
During that time, she continued to develop her skills and knowledge, passing all three of the Guild’s Advanced modules in Textile Framing, Conservation Framing and Mount Design & Function. The Framing Lot was the first picture framing business in the world to have all framers fully qualified with all available Guild qualifications and they are the only Advanced qualified framers in the South West of England.
Jo has written numerous articles for industry publications and hosted online seminars, workshops and meetings through the Covid lockdown period. She is a member of the Guild’s Technical Helpline and a Moderator on the Guild FrameTalk Forum and the UK based Framers Forum. In 2020 she became a Certified Examiner for the Guild, continuing to support the Guild’s qualification programme.
