Professional artist Stuart Scott (Sasco) hails from Helensburgh which is situated on the north of the Firth of Clyde, at the mouth of the Gareloch. Helensburgh is home to the Hill House which was designed in 1902/03 by world famous Glasgow architect and artist, Charles Rennie Mackintosh.
Stuart has been successfully framing his own artwork for a number of years. However, he felt it was time to push the boundaries and look at different methods of presentation and more advanced framing techniques.
Stuart has recently bought a listed, historic retail premises which will showcase his art and provide a perfect workshop area for his framing. Amazingly, the shop is where he did his school work experience more than 20 years ago! He is spending a lot of time and money bringing it up to standard while preserving its historical significance. While stripping down the original doors, Stuart discovered that they are original Victorian Pine. He plans on staining them for a more natural look. The push plate on the door had a decorative pattern which was almost hidden under years of grime. After a quick clean, Stuart discovered a three rose pattern reminiscent of a Charles Rennie Mackintosh design, and which would certainly fit in with Mackintosh’s connections with Helensburgh. While uncovering the tiles at the front of the shop, Stuart discovered that some were missing. He has commissioned replica tiles to replace them. Stuart is also retaining a mouse etching on the door glass which is believed to be the work of a former artist who used to own the shop.

With Stuart’s attention to detail which is clearly visible in his artwork, and the care he is putting in to renovating his new gallery/studio, we know for a fact that everything he learned while with us will be put to very good use. We’re looking forward to visiting when Stuart opens his gallery.

Stuart said this about his experience attending the course:
“Was a really enjoyable and interesting course with a great insight into the operation and running of a framing business. The tuition was very thorough, and opened my eyes to some new methods and better practices to follow when framing my work. There were no questions I had that couldn’t be answered, and although I had a fair amount of experience, I feel I have left with a much more rounded knowledge of all things framing. I really enjoyed the week. It was worth every penny and then some!”
